Australian wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario OAM has won her second Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham, taking gold in the T53/54 1500m. This makes her the first Australian-para-athlete to win four Commonwealth Games gold medals.
Donna Adams has become Tasmania’s first female Commissioner of Police, 35 years after joining the force straight out of school at 19. She has previously spoken about being outnumbered by men when she started her police career. Her outstanding career moments include a Commissioner’s Commendation for her work after the Port Arthur massacre and an Australian Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Janet Yang has become the first Asian-American person, and only the fourth woman, to be appointed as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A producer, whose film credits include The Joy Luck Club and The People vs Larry Flynt, she was hired early in her career to be Steven Spielberg’s eyes and ears in China for the filming of Empire of the Sun.
Rufina Peter is the first woman to be elected to the Papua New Guinea parliament in more than a decade. The 52-year-old economist decided to run for office out of frustration at the continued deterioration of infrastructure, services and living conditions in her country.
