Scott Morrison, and a lesson on leadership

Here's what real leaders do in times of crisis.." class="hs-featured-image" style="width:auto !important; max-width:50%; float:left; margin:0 15px 15px 0;">

Last week our Prime Minister visited Cobargo, a town decimated by fires and suffering the loss of 2 of its locals while fighting to save their homes. The footage of Morrison shows him to be on a ‘handshake’ tour, forcibly shaking hands with a 20 year old woman who lost her home. Once the handshake is done, she starts emotionally calling out her grievances, only to see Morrison’s back. He was clearly done. The handshake, after all, was completed.

Often, the funniest people are the ones who need to laugh the most. We can be fooled into thinking that comedians are happy-go-lucky, jolly and carefree. Often they’ve had to overcome a troubled past. It’s a strange paradox that the best comedians are the ones who learn how to use their turmoil as fuel to gain a new perspective and relate to people from all walks of life – they do this by making them laugh. Here are some of the stories from the women in comedy. Their commitment to changing their lives and refining their craft is inspiring.

It can be easy to forget how far we’ve collectively come as women. It seems like we’re always trying to shatter the glass ceiling in front of us, and even though we are making progress, it’s exhausting work. So, let’s energise ourselves by remembering the inspirational women in history who smashed the glass ceilings in front of them and continue to inspire us to overcome adversity.

Learning is part of life. What’s more, learning is essential for a fulfilling career. When we’re not learning and growing, we tend to feel stuck, are more likely to feel depressed, disenchanted and discontent with our career progress. No one likes feeling like they’re stuck in a rut. Often, we feel like we want to learn new and challenging things, but we just don’t know where to start. Learning is a skill in and of itself. We have to look at learning as a life long process of meta-learning, aka learning how to learn.

We've heard of great leaders like Oprah Winfrey, Sheryl Sandberg and Melinda Gates. But what makes them so great? Was it their natural proclivity to lead, or was it a set of particular skills that set them apart? When it comes to being a great leader, it's all about having the 4 critical skills.

What do people mean when they say “I’m more left-brained than right-brained?” They’re referring to the left and right hemisphere of their brain. These hemispheres look the same, but they have very unique functions. Scientists believe that the left hemisphere deals with the analytical world and decision making, while the right hemisphere deals with change. We usually think that musicians are using more of their right hemispheres, and scientists use their left, but research shows that this isn’t the case. Both hemisphere’s work together to keep us functioning well.

With women making up a minor fraction of managers and C-suite executives; it can be a challenge to find a female in power who can show you the ropes. The good news is that your potential female mentor doesn’t need to be from your organisation or even in the C-suite. They just need to have the relevant skills and lived experiences that you need to learn from. The art of finding a mentor is simple, but it takes patience and persistence. For ambitious women in the workplace, finding a female mentor can be the difference between disenchantment and achievement in your career.
